GA4: The Fundamentals
A course designed for individuals. 

In this course we will start with the basics, but we will also discuss your goals and show you how to create a measurement plan that is tailored to your business. At the end of this course you will have four things:

  1. You will be comfortable navigating the GA4 user interface to find or create the reports that are needed by your team.

  2. You will understand the GA4 data model and how it fundamentally differs from the model used in prior versions of Google Analytics.

  3. You be familiar with the ways that GA4 can be used to enhance your marketing strategies.

  4. You will develop a measurement plan that clarifies how GA4 will be used to support your business objectives.

GA4 Fundamentals 

Over three weeks, you’ll gain hands-on experience and learn how to set up GA4, understand its data model, track events, and create meaningful reports that drive smarter business decisions.

Whether you're a beginner or looking to refine your skills, this course will provide practical tools you can apply right away.

 

Here's what we'll cover together:

Week 1.

Understanding GA4 

We start with the basics: how GA4’s data model functions and how it calculates metrics differently from Universal Analytics. This session will cover:

  • Event Mapping: Learn which site or app interactions to track and why.

    • Types of Events: Distinguish between GA4’s pre-defined and custom events.

    • Use Case Walkthrough: Apply what you’ve learned using a real-world scenario to spot potential data tracking gaps.

Homework: Practical exercises and a quiz.

Week 2.

Data Collection and Configuration 

Our focus shifts to setting up and configuring your GA4 property effectively, ensuring accurate and useful data collection. Key areas include:

  • GA4 Configuration Deep Dive: Essential settings that affect data quality.

  • Avoiding Common Pitfalls: Learn to spot and fix typical setup errors.

  • Audience Building and Channel Grouping: Optimize how you categorize and target your audience.

Homework: Configuration tasks and a quiz.

Week 3.

Advanced Reporting 

Our final week explores GA4’s reporting tools, focusing on how to extract actionable insights from your data.

  • Reporting Tools Overview:

    • Overview of GA4 Reporting Sources:We'll explore the different reporting tools available within GA4, each suited for particular types of analysis.

    • Standard and Explore Reports: How to access, customize, and derive insights.

  • Practical Use Cases: Hands-on scenarios to practice what you’ve learned.

Final Task: Refine your GA4 migration strategy.

  • Engaging case studies and practical examples.

  • Access to our recorded sessions 

 

You will need access to a GA4 data stream via your own account or you can use a GA demo account.

What it isn’t

  • This course is focused on foundational and intermediate features of GA4, specifically designed to enhance your understanding and confidence. It does not cover:

    • In-depth Google Tag Manager (GTM) implementations.

    • Advanced BigQuery functionalities.

    • Detailed Looker usage.
